Health literacy is closely linked to literacy and education. It involves knowledge, motivation and competence to make judgments and decisions in relation to our health and the health of our environment. Health professionals have a key tool in increasing the knowledge, motivation and competence in relation to the health of users and patient role. This guide is intended for health professionals to convey the basics of what it is, what it does, what it encompasses, and how it works in health literacy. The guide presents the main definitions of health literacy, standards and practices in oral, written communication and new communication technology, has been observed to be effective in health. In his final paragraphs current knowledge of health literacy interventions and outcomes standards and practices in health education, conducted in people with low health literacy is exposed.1
